Ways to Socialise With Your Co-Workers on Your First Day of Work

The first day of work can be really nerve-wracking since your first impressions with everyone will end up affecting your image for a long time. Trying to socialise with co-workers is another situation you have to face which a lot have problems with especially on the first day. So if you’re facing a situation which many find difficult to confront, here are some of the ways you can socialise with your coworkers on day one.

Start light conversations.

It’s impossible for you to socialise with your co-workers without starting a conversation with them but there’s a boundary up to which you can talk to them about. Keep your conversations with your co-workers light and avoid going personal things and others such as religion and politics. You wouldn’t want to make your first few conversations awkward by asking them about their relationships.

Show some kindness and lend a hand.

In the workplace, there will be situations wherein some of your co-workers would need help with some stuff. If you’re not busy or too occupied with your own work, go out of your way and give them some help. Making a special effort to be kind to your co-workers is something that will help in improving your relationships with them.

Step outside of your comfort zone.

The comfort zone is one of the biggest hindrances when it comes to socializing in any occasion. If you remain inside your comfort zone, you’ll only tend to socialize with fairly few of your co-workers and those out of your zone would end up ignored. If you want to have a good relationship with all of your co-workers, you should learn to expand your zone.

Take pictures.

Technology has opened up new ways to interact with people more. Taking pictures with your new co-workers can show them that you cherish your first days with them. This can help in nurturing your relationships with the new people in your life. However, you should limit yourself as well when it comes to taking pictures with them or it may ruin their focus on their work and may even end up with them having a bad relationship with you instead of a good one.

Have lunch with them.

Socialising with your co-workers doesn’t mean you should just talk to them during work hours. You can ask them out during lunch to get to know them better and chat with them more. When you talk during break, both you and your co-workers will be able to talk more than in the office which would help improve the relationships with them better.

Listen more.

When you’re having conversations with your co-workers, you should be more of a listener than a talker. This way, you’ll be able to learn more about your co-workers as well as avoid saying something that may offend them. It will also make them feel at ease since people tend to be inclined more to those who listen attentively.
